All 40 metros

Each profile: cost of living, rent, climate, Chinese community, commute, taxes and flights to China.

Data & method

Every number comes from an official public source: BEA Regional Price Parities (cost of living), the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (rent, home values, income, population, Chinese and Asian share, commute, education, occupations), NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals (temperature, rain), Tax Foundation 2026 tables (state income and sales tax) and dated airline schedule reports (nonstop flights to mainland China).

Each of your answers adds weight to a few factors. For every factor we rank the 40 metros from lowest to highest, and a metro’s score is the weighted sum of how far above or below the middle it sits. The match % is how close it comes to the best possible score for your answers.

Metros are Census metropolitan areas, so suburbs count. Schools, safety and job openings are not scored — we only use numbers we can cite. It’s a fun starting point, not advice.
